The Analogy between Sport and Business
Today was a great day my favourite team the REDS had a big win in an Australian Derby against the Brumbies
It was a great day and I have to admit it hasn’t happened very often lately (or for some time really)
But when it does happen the feeling is great
The team looked like it was playing like a unit
Everyone had a job and was executing the job to their ability
The coach has done his bit, he watches from afar after giving the players a game plan and making sure they have the have the skills to execute the plan.
But the coach nor the players can’t possibly know what will happen in the game.
The coach can’t run on the field and tell them what to do next or what to expect.
(Even though the coach is far more experienced than the players)
The coach has to rely on the understanding he has provided his chargers.
If the coach has done his job it won’t be the exact play or the ‘action” that they have practiced that the players will rely on.
It will be the outcome, what was defined as success, the understanding of what they are there to achieve not just for the outcome of the whole game but for every set piece, every play of the ball.
because to reach that success, the action they trained for will probably have to be modified, tweaked or forced to do something different during the chaos of the game.
But if the plans come together the team will do what they can to reach the ultimate goal
To win the game
But win or lose the coach needs to recognise the outcome, “the success” not just the action
Sure some actions would not have been part of the game plan and the coach will have to ensure those skills are improved before the next game.
But the team has reached the goal, they won the game.
Now it is time to move to the next challenge, next weekend and implement the plan again and look to create successful outcomes that will move them to the ultimate goal of winning the competition
Now all you have to do is replace the REDS with your team and the coach with your name and see if that reflects how your plan is going.
If it isn’t going that well, perhaps you need some help becoming the coach of your team.
Send me a message and tell me how your team is going, are they hitting their goals?
